TWILIGHT SANCTUARIES

An immersive multimedia portrait series that reclaims twilight as a space of rest, belonging, and refuge for Black people.

Purpose

Ingrid Woode presents Twilight Sanctuaries, a multimedia installation that transforms the hour of dusk, historically associated with fear in Black American history, into a space of rest, memory, and dignity.

The project combines large-format 4x5 film portraits, 360-degree video environments, and original music compositions to create an immersive experience centered on Black rest and presence.

Twilight Sanctuaries depicts moments of stillness, reflection, laughter, and quiet ritual, positioning rest as both a sacred act and an essential human right.

Inspired by Woode’s personal experience witnessing her grandmother’s journey with Alzheimer’s disease, the work explores the fragility and endurance of memory through light, sound, and image.

Each installation functions as a “sanctuary,” inviting audiences to step into an environment where rest is protected and honored.

Her work consistently bridges sound and image to explore themes of memory, identity, and belonging.

Through Twilight Sanctuaries, she offers a powerful meditation on rest, reclaiming space for Black stillness as an act of care, resistance, and humanity.
